Supreme Court Upholds Federal Ban on "Partial Birth" Abortion

Mark Sherman of the Associated Press reports:
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long- awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

The opponents of the act "have not demonstrated that the Act would be unconstitutional in a large fraction of relevant cases," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.

The decision pitted the court's conservatives against its liberals, with President Bush's two appointees, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, siding with the majority.

If you voted for Ralph Nader in 2000, especially if you live in Florida or New Hampshire, I hope you're proud of what you helped to accomplish.

Don't you remember? Al Gore won Florida in 2000 and the election, but then it was stolen from him.

Let's also remember that Ralph Nader urged Democratic Senators not to confirm Roberts or Alito, but they did anyway. Nader has always been better on the issues than Democrats and Republicans.

Had the 97,000 Floridians who voted for Nader been smart enough to vote for Gore, Florida wouldn't have been close enough to steal.

"Nader has always been better on the issues than Democrats and Republicans."

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that you're correct about that. The fact remains that Nader had no chance of winning. Americans were, and still are, nearly unanimous in not wanting Ralph Nader to be president. The choice was between Gore and Bush. The fools who chose to cast a meaningless protest vote for Nader decided to allow Bush to become president. The only thing the Green "Party" will ever be good for is electing Republicans.
